Melasma & Pigment Handout
Hydroquinone & RetinA
Tri-Luma
Strict Sun Avoidance
Tint Car Windows, Sunscreen, Sunblock, Heat Exposure
Hydroquinone 4% & RetinA 0.1% are used to lighten pigmentation problems.
Melasma, Hyperpigmentation, Sun Spots, Age Spots & other conditions
They REDUCE the amount of pigment our melanocytes make.
Sun exposure and heat cause melanocytes to make MORE pigment
Apply both products every third day x 2 weeks, every other day x 2 weeks and then every evening.
Apply the RetinA first and let it dry and then apply the Hydroquinone overtop of the RetinA. Apply just to the dark areas (if you apply to the whole face, you will fade everything and you will still have the contrast between dark areas and lighter skin (everything will be lighter). You want to BLEND to make everything the same color.
Use a cotton tip applicator when appling the RetinA and Hydroquinone to a small spot.
You can also use Tri-Luma which is a combination of RetinA, Hydroquinone and Flucinolong (a steroid). You can only use the steroid for a few months and then you should stop the Tru-Luma.
We will also want to give you a Hydroquinone Holiday for a few months each year. This is best done in the Winter when Sun Exposure is minimal (assuming you don’t ski).
Strict Sun Avoidance and possibly Heat Avoidance is important. Consider getting your Car Windows Tinted and consider the light that reflects off the sand, water and pavement during the Summer (so even umbrellas are not perfect for blocking the sunlight).
